RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to examine how anxious patients were before and after receiving intravitreal injections, which are commonly used in the treatment of ophthalmologic illnesses. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study was performed by administering a questionnaire containing sociodemographic information as well as two scales (Beck Anxiety and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) to patients undergoing intravitreal injection in the ophthalmology department. The two scales were given to patients before and after the intravitreal injection. RESULTS: The patients who completed part of the study were 45% male and 55% female. There was a significant difference (p<0.001) between the median values of STAI Trait anxiety inventory scores prior to intravitreal injection and STAI Trait anxiety inventory scores after intravitreal injection. The median values of STAI State anxiety inventory scores before intravitreal injection and after intravitreal injection differed (p<0.001). There was a difference (p<0.001) between the median values of Beck anxiety inventory scores before intravitreal injection and after intravitreal injection. CONCLUSIONS: Patients who will have intravitreal injections may experience a high rate of anxiety before the treatment due to the invasive nature of the technique. As a result, intravitreal injection patients will benefit from psychological assistance and anxiety-reduction approaches.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to review the patients admitted to pediatric emergency service with a history of accidental and suicidal drug intake within the first nine months of the pandemic period and the same period a year ago. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study is done retrospectively on patients with a history of accidental and suicidal drug intakes between March-December 2019 and March-December 2020. RESULTS: The study included 360 patients. Of 250 (69.4%) patients admitted in 2019, 163 (65.2%) of them were accidental drug intakes, while 87 (34.8%) were suicidal drug intakes. In 2020, of the 110 (30.6%) patients admitted, 73 (66.4%) of them were accidental drug intakes, while 37 (33.6%) were suicidal drug intakes. The ratio of accidental drug intakes to total patient admissions in 2019 and 2020 was 0.23% and 0.33%, respectively (z=-0.44; p=0.65).  The ratio of suicidal drug intakes to total patient admissions in 2019 and 2020 was 0.12% and 0.16%, respectively (z=-0.1956; p=0.84), and an increase in the ratio of suicidal drug intakes was observed during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: With the pandemic, increased cases of neglect because of accidental drug intake and the increase in suicidal drug intake are worrisome. Protecting and improving the mental health of the society, especially of parents and adolescents, is very important in preventing suicide and child neglect and abuse from reaching dangerous levels in pandemics.

RESUMO

In this study, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on physical activity and sedentary lifestyle of young adults were evaluated. The cross-sectional study was conducted on individuals aged 18-35 years between December 2021 and March 2022. In the study, sedentary life was evaluated with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), screening time and the Brief Eating Behaviors Questionnaire. 397 people participated in the study and the mean age was 24.41 ± 4.18. Body Mass Index (BMI), time spent in front of the screen, need for psychosocial support, and Short Diet Behaviors Questionnaire (SDBQ) scores showed a significant increase during the pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period (respectively; p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001). It has been observed that there is an increase in the time spent in front of the screen, worsening in eating behaviors, decrease in physical activity, and an increase in BMI values of young adults during pandemic.

RESUMO

The most common cause for severe cases of hemophilia A is the homologous recombination involving intron 22 and related sequences outside the F8 gene. F8 coding regions of the gene including the exon/intron junctions were sequenced in 10 Turkish hemophilia A patients all of whom have been typed negative for intron 22 inversion and who did not have a detectable change by DGGE analysis. Pathological changes including two novel deletions (c. 205del CT and c. 3699del ACAT), one novel missense mutation (9546A) and two recurrent missense mutations were observed in five patients. The c. 2110C > T is another novel pathological change affecting exonic splicing enhancer site in two patients. One of the remaining three patients had a recurrent vWD type 2N mutation in the F8 binding site of the vWF (C788R). The S1269S polymorphism (c. 3864A > C) detected phenotype. Conclusively, sequencing of the promoter and the coding regions of 10 hemophilia A patients contributes four novel pathological mutations to the F8 mutations list and reveals a rediagnosis of hemophilia A but is still not sufficient to confirm hemophilia A phenotype in two patients.
